I’m part of a Facebook group that shares old, sometimes forgotten pictures of things from around the state of Iowa. Someone posted these last night, which I found both fascinating, and terrifying.

This school was in Keokuk, IA and eventually merged with Drake University in Des Moines.

Take a look at the class photo below.

For the last time, Jenkins, wear your hat when you pose with the cadaver! We’re not uncivilized!

He’s just resting his hand on that skull like, “This....this is mine”.

Not a caption, but I can be distracted from the gore by noticing that iffy facial hair isn’t just a modern thing, and that the guy second from far R has an unusual patterned jacket, something I’ve never seen in old pics.

Back then, it seems like people were a lot less skittish about dead bodies. Apparently, it was common to take family photos with deceased children, too. I used to travel to Keokuk regularly - great town, but hard to get to. All of my caption ideas are pretty gross, so I’ll skip that part...

I think the most disturbing part is the foreground...like I maybe almost can get posing with a corpse as a unique thing, but the out of focus bare limb bones just laying around like it ain’t no thang...so normal we won’t even move it out of the way while we take this picture.

That looks creepy, but when you think about it, everything we know about the human body had to be figured out from scratch. The Bible wasn’t handed down out of the clouds by God himself, and neither was Gray’s Anatomy .

The guy in the floral(?) white smock has an interesting jaunty-hat thing going on, and the man on the far left has a beard OF LEGEND.

Much of what we know came from experiments conducted by the Nazis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_human_experimentation

The reason these trials were so valuable (and horrible) was that they were conducted on the living, not the dead, often without the benefit of anesthesia.
